1030hrs: Ewha Woman’s University 이화여자대학교, Ewha Woman’s University Museum 이화여자대학교박물관
Ewha Woman’s University is Korea’s first university established in 1886 and is currently the world’s largest female educational institute and one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. It started out as a mission school for girls and was only granted the permission to become a university in 1945. The name “Ewha” means “pear blossom”, and you can see it being incorporated into the school's logo.
The museum was opened in 1935 as part of the university’s effort to preserve Korea’s rich cultural heritage. It houses a wide range of artefacts such as paintings, relics, ceramics and folk items, dating back to prehistoric times. In the 1950s, the museum received a massive donation from the private collection of Dr Helen Kim, then president of Ewha. By the 1960s, the museum developed into a full-scale cultural institution.
1200hrs: Walk around Sinchon 신촌
Sinchon is located within Ewha Woman’s University, Yonsei University and Hongik University, thus it is like a gathering place for the university students. It has a young and lively vibe. This is also where festivals that attracts the young crowd will be held at, such as the water festival and beer festival. Other than the many stores and food, U-PLEX is one of the most popular shopping mall to get trendy affordable clothing.
1330hrs: Cafe Layered 레이어드 (Yeonnamdong), Stamp Coffee 스탬프커피 (Yeonnamdong)
Cafe Layered offers an impressive selection of scones and cakes. The other outlet is at Anguk.
Stamp Coffee is famous for its dog-shaped meringue cookies that are dusted with soybean powder (known as injeolmi). It also offers a wide range of scones and cakes, similar to Cafe Layered.
1530hrs: Walk around Yeonnam-dong 연남동
Yeonnam-dong has quickly gained popularity in the recent years. Hongdae is more hippy while Yeonnam-dong is more chill and sophisticated. It is where you can find many cafes, shops, boutiques, art culture, and more. If you have the time, pop by Hongdae Youth Workshop (홍대청년공방) and learn to make a neon light!
